American artist and caricaturist, W. W. Denslow, imagined Jack as a dog in the common nursery rhyme that goes like this: “Jack be nimble, Jack be quick, Jack jump over the candlestick.” According to the Oxford Dictionary of Nursery Rhymes, jumping over a candlestick without being burned was said to be good luck. This Jack, a two-year-old Lab mix, arrived at the Columbus County Animal Shelter in North Carolina on May 5th as a stray. Unfortunately, he was extremely thin at the time of intake, so it was assumed that he had been on the street for a while. Jack tested heartworm positive, which put him at risk.
