It used to be that there is no county animal shelter in Jackson County, Indiana. When a stray dog was reported to the sheriff's department, a deputy was dispatched to simply shoot the dog. Fortunately, in 2009 the sheriff's department realized that the situation was untenable. An agreement was reached with Ruth Riley's Red Sky Rescue in Jackson County to have stray dogs taken to the rescue's shelter facility rather than be shot. Fast-forward to April 12th, 2016, when Valerie, a two-year-old English Coonhound, was brought to Red Sky Rescue by animal control.
