There's no tellin' why Helen (who loves to go a-smellin') ended up in a shelter cell like a felon! This two-year-old Labrador Retriever mix arrived very emaciated at the Sampson County Animal Shelter in North Carolina on May 24th. We don't know how or why Helen ended up at the shelter, but we do know that she was doubly at risk. Not only was Helen heartworm positive, but she was a black dog. Many people are surprised to learn that black dogs are among the least likely to be adopted or rescued from shelters. So Helen faced some tough odds.
